Catalina Island

The small island known by the aborigines as “Toeya” is today one of the most visited and most attractive destinations in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. We refer to an authentic Caribbean paradise, where cruise lines arrive in their programs through the Caribbean.

It is also known as Serena Key, for being an island of very white sand, near the southwest coast of this country. We are facing a protected natural park, in which there is no building, very sheltered by the wind, thanks to which the sea is always absolutely calm.

This island can be considered an ideal model of tropical fun and safety, a kind of living design to manage an area dedicated to tourism, but, be careful, under a totally conservationist scheme.

This little island astonishes despite its small size that does not reach 15 square kilometers, of which a kilometer of beach has been allocated for the management of tourists who exclusively seek fun in the sun taking advantage of perfectly prepared sands, water of optimal temperature, a sea for all water sports, all the colors of the tropical universe and isolation alternatives for a sublime communication with the environment. Catalina Island has three important beaches (West, North and East), two of which have great potential for the sustainable development of tourism (East and West), despite the fact that currently only use one (the western one). In addition to the aforementioned beaches, which occupy more than two thirds of its coastline,

It is one of the best dive sites in the Dominican Republic is the spectacular wall. From the beach, a gentle slope leads to the impressive wall that descends to more than 100 meters deep, with two impressive steps at 25 and 40 meters. The entire slope from the beach to the wall is an authentic orchard covered with corals and fauna, a platform of thousands of square meters less than 3 meters deep, ideal for lung diving. Possibly the best place in the Caribbean for this activity. Every inch of this bottom is covered in sponges and coral. The depth of this exceptional and unique terrace varies from 1.5 to 6 meters. Without a doubt, it is a privileged place. Another dive site is El Acuario. The name says it all. There are incredible fauna and coral formations waiting for you.

Definitely, this island is an authentic underwater garden of corals and fauna, explored by lovers of underwater life, where the remains of the pirate ship “Cara merchant”, dating from 1699, of the famous Captain William Kidd, are found. you can see several anchors and dozens of guns.

This island is the perfect dream for any vacationer looking to combine rest with a little adventure. For these reasons, there are daily tours that usually at 8 in the morning and return at approximately 4 in the afternoon. We recommend arriving at the closest point of the island, which is the Province of La Romana, and from here you board boats that transfer from the marina of said town to the island. In addition to La Marina, some boats leave from the Chavón River. From Bayahibe the distance is greater, but many tour operators use this starting point. The tours include snacks and lunches, as well as various entertainment activities.
